The Library & Museum

Freemasons’ Hall, Great Queen Street, London WC1, is the home and headquarters of the United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE). Built between 1927 and 1932 to commemorate those Freemasons who lost their lives in the First World War, it is one of the finest art-deco buildings in London and has been used for numerous films and television productions.

A video tour is available at
www.ugle.org.uk, and free guided tours of the main ceremonial areas take place every weekday except when the Grand Temple is in use. On Saturdays, tours are available only if booked in advance, and a booking fee is payable. Group bookings can be made for regular tours or for special evening events, subject to agreement. You can call 020 7935 9257 for details of tour times and bookings.
(Please note: the Library and Museum reserves the right to refuse admittance to any tour and to cancel tours at short notice.)

Freemasons’ Hall is also the home of the Library and Museum which operates as an independent charitable trust to house and administer one of the world’s finest collections of Masonic artefacts, books and documents. Its director, Diane Clements, has full-time and part-time staff including a curator, librarian and archivist. A series of exhibitions portrays the history of Freemasonry in England and specific aspects of Masonic life. The Museum’s collections are extensive, including pottery and porcelain, glassware, silver, furniture and clocks, Masonic regalia, items belonging to famous and royal Freemasons, prints, engravings and photographs.

Amongst the comprehensive collection of printed books and manuscripts, Masonic music in English and many foreign languages are some fine eighteenth and nineteenth century bindings. The Library and Museum is also responsible for the archives of the United Grand Lodge of England and material from this archive is available to researchers.

The Library and Museum is open Monday to Friday from 10:00-17:00. Staff are very happy to identify objects, handle historical enquiries, help with Lodge histories and conduct general research. Details of Library and Museum activities and on-line access to the catalogue is available via the website at www.freemasonry.london.museum; alternatively please contact the Director on 020 7395 9257 for further details.

Within Freemasons’ Hall is a shop for gifts, stationery, postcards and souvenirs of Freemasons’ Hall, a wide range of official publications, books and magazines and regalia. The Shop is open on weekdays from 10:30-17:30 and on Saturdays from 10:00-14:00 (though Freemasons’ Hall is closed on Bank Holiday weekends, Christmas and Easter).
